We recently talked about why blogging is still beneficial for businesses in 2024. Now, we’ll show you how to do it to actually reap those benefits.
In light of the latest Google updates, it’s more important than ever to have a solid strategy for doing a blog. This is the best way to drive quality traffic and get the rankings you need.
Below, we’ll show you 6 of the vital and effective blogging strategies for 2024. Whether you’re blogging for lead generation or for brand awareness, these tactics can help with your discoverability and traffic!
1. Add value to content
It’s an old chestnut, but it still matters. Among other things, consistently offering value is one of the best ways to get people to keep coming back to your blog again, even without Google.
Besides, it’s also a good safety measure for SEO. Google states that it sees content as spam if it offers nothing useful and is produced mainly to manipulate search rankings.
That often includes AI-generated content rehashing what’s already been said about a topic online. And that’s not just because it’s typically produced at scale to try and manipulate rankings. It’s also because it’s rarely human-checked for veracity or uniqueness and as such, often doesn’t add value.
2. Double down on UGC
Here's one way to add value: Google and audiences love UGC, also known as user-generated content. That means stuff from real people like your readers!
But how can you incorporate that in your blog, you ask? Several ways, including featuring content from influencers you’ve partnered with.
You can also feature content from users on your social media and other channels. Make it prominent, let them know they’ve been featured, and encourage them to promote the post where they’ve been featured!
3. Diversify traffic sources
In the wake of recent Google updates, more and more people are seeing why it’s worth their while!
You want your blog to get traffic from sources other than Google. You can promote it in your newsletter, via social media, and even through YouTube.
All of these give you multiple traffic sources so you’re not entirely reliant on search rankings for blog discovery. It’ll help you weather big algorithm changes.
4. Don’t buy cheap backlinks
On the topic of search rankings for your blog, backlinks will still be useful. Here’s the thing, though: it’s a bit on the shadowy side of SEO, but most people do buy links to their articles to give them a boost in authority.
It may not be perfectly white-hat, but it is common enough that it can be done. That said, there’s a caveat here, especially given that Google’s doubling down on things like link spam. Be careful and don't overdo it!
In particular, stay away from buying the super-cheap backlinks by the hundreds. If they’re cheap and you can get a whole bunch of them for just a few dollars per link, they’re not likely to be useful to your blog’s ranking (possibly the opposite!).
5. Go light on those ads
If you’re thinking of monetising your blog with ads through things like Mediavine or AdSense, that’s fine… but be careful. This isn’t true across the board, but a lot of blogs that got hit in the last updates were ones with high ad density on pages.
So, go easy on the monetisation. Try opening your own blog pages without an ad blocker to see what the user experience is like for your readers and adjust accordingly.
6. Consider upping your EEAT
EEAT refers to Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It’s not necessarily a ranking factor, but it can do a lot to get people (and possibly based on signals that proceed from that, Google) to see your site as a genuine source of good info.
That means putting up your credentials, adding identifiable photos of yourself as the author, making sure the brand linked to your site has a Google Business Profile with solid reviews, and linking only to credible sources.
